Overview

Feel the real life between Nature, Heritage and Authenticity

Just beyond the French Riviera, the Roya Valley is a spectacular borderland of dramatic mountains, medieval villages and ancient traditions, where French and Italian influences have shaped a unique cultural identity.

Still relatively undiscovered, the Roya Valley is an ideal destination for travelers seeking authenticity, cultural heritage, breathtaking scenery, and genuine encounters with local communities.

Our private excursions from Nice take you far from the classic tourist routes, with a special focus on Saorge, La Brigue and Tende.

A Valley Built on Solidarity. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Roya Valley is its strong culture of community and mutual support. The locals remain closely connected to nature, local knowledge and traditional skills, rather than following the speed and pressures of modern urban life.

For generations, people living in these mountains have had to deal with long winters, difficult terrain and periods of isolation. This environment encouraged a strong tradition of solidarity, cooperation and self-reliance. Today, this spirit remains an important part of the identity of the valley.

Meeting local people provides an opportunity to understand another relationship with time, work, nature and community.

The journey is about taking the time to walk through an ancient village, listen to its stories, meet the people who live there, discover its traditions and understand how a community has adapted to life in the mountains.

These encounters are at the heart of the experience.

Saorge

A Medieval Village Clinging to the Mountains

Perched dramatically on the mountainside, Saorge, listed among the most beautiful villages in France, is a maze of stone houses, steep lanes, vaulted passages and hidden stairways.

We explore its medieval streets, discover its Baroque heritage and, when possible, visit the former Franciscan monastery and its terraced gardens.

Saorge offers an immediate immersion into the history and character of the Roya - a place where the mountains have shaped both the architecture and the way people live.

La Brigue

The Heart of the Experience

This secluded mountain village perfectly embodies the Franco-Italian character of the Roya Valley. Its medieval streets, stone houses and traditions reflect a history shaped by changing borders and centuries of cultural exchange.

La Brigue also offers a fascinating insight into the valley's strong community spirit. Harsh winters, isolation and demanding mountain life have created a tradition of solidarity, cooperation and self-reliance that remains part of the local identity.

Depending on availability, we may meet local artisans, farmers, beekeepers and producers, discovering their crafts, products and stories.

Also, discover two of La Brigue's hidden treasures: the Pont du Coq, a remarkable historic stone bridge steeped in local legend, and the valley's beautifully painted chapels, where extraordinary biblical frescoes transform simple rural churches into remarkable works of art.

La Brigue also carries a remarkable chapter of European history: formerly Italian, the village became part of France after the 1947 Treaty of Paris and a local referendum, giving it a unique identity. La Brigue became a French village with deep Italian roots, shaped by a border that has moved around it. Today, traces of this history can still be felt in the architecture, family names, traditions, language and relationship between the village and its Italian neighbours.

Tende

The Gateway to the High Mountains

From La Brigue, we continue towards Tende, at the northern end of the valley.

Perched high above the Roya, Tende marks the transition towards the high Alps and the Mercantour. Its colourful houses, steep streets and mountain architecture reflect the particular identity of this former Italian territory.

Tende also provides access to some of the most spectacular landscapes of the region, including the Vallée des Merveilles, famous for its prehistoric rock engravings.

Good to know

Questions guests ask before booking

Where do we start, and at what time?

We pick you up at your hotel, villa or the cruise terminal. Departure is usually between 8:30 and 9:30 - earlier to beat the crowds, later if you are on holiday and it is holiday time.

How is lunch handled?

We book the table, you choose the register: a gastronomic restaurant, a Provençal bistro, or a farm table. Lunch is not included in the tour price so that you keep the choice. Dietary requirements are never a problem - tell us in advance.

What language will the tour be in?

English or French by default. Spanish, Arabic and Berber are also possible - Fouad speaks all five.

Can we combine this with another tour over two days?

Often the best plan. The second day is quoted at a reduced rate.

What happens if the weather turns?

The day shifts without losing its character. We only cancel for genuinely unsafe mountain or sea conditions, and then we reschedule or refund.

How and when do we pay?

You receive a written proposal with a firm price for your group. No deposit is required to hold a date more than a week out. Payment on the day, by card or in cash.
